Don’t Be a Square: 10 Tips for Betting on Football

Locks Don’t Exist – “Anyone who has watched sports for about a month realizes that the difference between winning and losing, especially against the spread, can be infinitesimally small,” Gordon says. “Because alcohol clouds your judgment and usually helps you to make rash decisions you usually wouldn’t otherwise make. Thanks to the juice, the only one who profits in this scenario is the bookmaker. If North Texas is his best bet on a Saturday then that is his bet. “The sharps are usually members of a betting syndicate privy to the most up-to-date information on injuries, weather, game plans, and, most important, the real power of the teams involved. Research Football Services – “Most sports services realize that most people who sign up with them are insecure,” Gordon warns. Avoid Chasing Bets – “Don’t do it! There is no worse way to mismanage your bankroll than to chase your bets after a losing day,” cautions Moseman on the dangerous practice of trying to immediately win back your losses.

3.

Michael Konik, a sports writer and best-selling author of The Smart Money (Simon & Schuster 2006), explains why it is so hard for the recreational gambler to win at betting on football. “Common wisdom says that over the course of a long football season the average man or woman will pick approximately 50 percent winners. If you want advice about sports betting, find someone who has a successful track record. And why not? We have unconditional love for the sport and betting $50 or $100 on a game adds an extra rush of adrenaline. There is a wealth of information on the Internet; it is just up to you to find it and research it daily.”

“A square is the average, unsophisticated gambler whose decision making is based on hunches, media manipulation, or spurious systems that cannot overcome the bookmaker’s inherent mathematical advantage,” Konik explains. “If you become an expert on a smaller conference like the WAC, you have a good chance to beat the house because sports book operators do not have m88 the time or resources to follow this conference the way you can. Chasing losses is the fastest way to the poor house.”

8.

So, is it possible for the average square to become a little sharper in making football bets this season? According to professionals like Vacarro, Konik and Gordon, amateur bettors have the best chance to win if they demonstrate a little patience and follow the 10 basic tips below. The only locks that exist are those that need keys to open them.”

“The biggest mistake that amateur bettors make is they increase their bets when they are losing,” Sevransky says. Otherwise, you’re better off doing your own research.”

. Drinking and Gambling Don’t Mix – “There is a reason the casinos in Las Vegas supply you with free drinks while you are gambling,” Moseman says. “For example, if you have a $1,000 bankroll for the season, you should generally bet no more than $50 a game.”

But that doesn’t mean you have to bet like a “square” and throw away your hard-earned money.

So, how much should you bet a game?

Ted Sevransky, a well-known Las Vegas gambler and sports consultant with Sportsmemo.com, agrees.

So, how much are we gambling each football season?

“The talking heads on TV know nothing about sports betting,” says Sevransky. “Teams play inspired ball at home. “The key to proper money management is to be sure not to bet more than you can afford to lose.”

“Most people with an understanding of football gambling bet between 3 percent and 5 percent of their bankroll, increasing when they win and reducing when they lose,” Vaccaro says. “When you’re in a good rhythm and winning, you want to increase your bets. “Squares usually bet later in the week and they tend to pick the favorites. Focus on Conferences – “The best way to win money betting football is to develop a niche and follow it closely,” Moseman advises. “There will be more discrepancy in the numbers at different sports books. If you like an underdog, it is best to get your bet in as late as possible, where there is heavy action from squares on favorites. Consider Underdogs – “In the long-run, it’s easier to win betting on the underdog,” Konik says. But, when you’re struggling, that’s when you want to reduce your bet size until you get out of your slump. In fact, sports bettors must pick 52.4 percent winners just to break even.”

Newspapers and popular sports sites routinely publish the lines or point spreads for games, and football insiders offer their picks to viewers each week on ESPN and other cable networks. He loses year after year, according to Dan Gordon, a top football handicapper and author of How to Beat the Sports Books (Cardoza Publishing 2005). “He is not jaded by teams and does not bet with his heart. The only touts bettors should consider are the ones who talk about the long haul and realistic winning percentages, which are in the upper 50 percent to lower 60 percent range.”

And remember, in the immortal words of “Fast” Eddie Felson, “Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.”

And where does all that money go?

“A sharp or smart has a plan of what he wants to do,” says Vaccaro, the director of sports operations and public relations at Lucky’s Race and Sports Book in Las Vegas. Avoid Exotic Bets – “For very skilled handicappers, with a proven track record, there can, at least in theory, be value in betting parlays,” says Gordon on the type of bet that combines two or more individual wagers. Giving 11 to 10 odds is almost always the cheapest price you can give.”

Certainly not back into the pockets of the average bettor. “Most people prefer to bet on the ‘better’ team, the one that will probably win the game. “In trying to bamboozle potential customers, many services make claims about having scouts all over the country that give them inside information and promise 70 or even 80 percent winners, as if the bookmakers were the biggest suckers in the world.

Although exact figures are impossible to calculate, according to Jimmy Vaccaro, widely considered to be Las Vegas’ most influential bookmaker, Americans probably wager more than $50 billion a year on NFL and college football combined. These books change their numbers according to the betting patterns of their customers, so it is not entirely uncommon to find two or three point differences in the lines.”

But even though the math says it’s virtually impossible to win on a consistent basis, Americans continue to bet on football. He is not taken in by being involved in USC-Notre Dame just because it is the biggest watched game of the day.

1. If you are going to go with a favorite, it is best to place your bet early in the week when the sharps are laying heavy money on the points. Big underdogs often find ways to cover the spread and they rarely give up toward the end of a game in front of the home crowd.”

10. “If you listen to their advice, you are sure to lose. On college you will be able to find different lines at different sports books. Shop For Numbers – “Another important aspect of betting on football is shopping for the best number,” Moseman explains. Bet at the Right Time – “The sharp bettors tend to bet underdogs, and they tend to bet them early,” Moseman says.

“There is probably no better bet in sports than playing an underdog at home,” Moseman says.

Even Hollywood is not immune – think Two for the Money with Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey.

While these tips don’t guarantee you’re going to win, hopefully they can make you a little less square and a little more sharp in your picks this season. Not all games work according to this formula, but it is usually a good rule of thumb.”

“A square or recreational player might have a vague plan, but after two Corona’s he will definitely run to the window and make a hasty decision on the USC-Notre Dame game because he wants to be involved in the party atmosphere,” Vaccaro says. So underdogs tend to be slightly undervalued – except by the sharps.”

“The standard bet requires gamblers to lay $11 for every $10 they want to win with the extra $1 or 10 percent known as the juice,” Konik says.

6. “Over the course of several seasons, the percentage of bettors who turn a profit is minuscule.”

5.

Betting on football games; whether it’s through a local bookie, an offshore Internet site or a Nevada casino (still the only legal place in America to make football bets), most of us have done it or know of someone who has.

However, Konik adds that there are some bettors who actually know how to beat the bookies. Also, being “in action” can make a dull late-afternoon game (Buffalo vs. They use powerful computers that can process millions of bits of data and produce a more accurate point-spread line than the bookmakers.”

2. Money Management – “This is without a doubt the most important aspect of betting on sports and possibly the most neglected,” says Morey “Doc” Moseman, a professional gambler and sports consultant with DocSports.com for nearly 40 years.

7. “In the NFL, a game will often be totally turned around by one or two plays, or even a single penalty. The payout is just the same as far as he is concerned. “As for me, the best bet in football is betting the point spread or over/under totals on individual games. There are almost an infinite number of scenarios that can happen in a single football game.

Another difference between squares and sharps is how they approach betting on game day.

Also, it’s probably a good idea to disregard advice from the myriad of ex-players and football experts you see on television each week. “Thus, the bookies love and cherish the squares.”

Moseman agrees and especially likes home underdogs.

“In an average season, fewer than one bettor in twelve turns a profit,” Gordon says. The NFL, for example, will have very similar numbers at most of the betting shops you visit. Oakland comes to mind) seem like the Super Bowl. Slim underdogs regularly win outright. To be a successful sports bettor you need to operate with a clear mind.”

“The bookies fear and despise a tiny coterie of professional bettors known as ‘the sharps,'” Konik says.

Online Gambling: A Growing Addiction

That will always be there. Win or lose, it didn’t matter to me, it just set me up to bet again.”

The problem is affecting younger people as well. Drawn in by the popularity of poker, half of all men in college are gambling on an monthly basis — even though betting on sports is illegal everywhere in the U.S. He served a year in prison and now works for a compulsive gambling helpline. I got to get myself out of it.

“I’ve heard other people compare it to a cocaine addiction, the high you get from that, and that’s the euphoria I felt,” he said. “It becomes an all-consuming activity. The lining up the money, the handicapping of the game, the betting of the game, the watching of the game. As gambling on the Internet becomes more popular and more sites crop up, those numbers are expected to increase.

“I think it’s a devastating illness, it’s an illness that if it’s not treated, it will end up that the person’s whole lifestyle will be affected,” said Ed Looney, executive director of Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey.

Mark Erickson always craved a piece of the action — so the accountant from Phoenix started betting on sports over the Internet.

.

It is now high season for sports betting. People love to bet on it. except Nevada.

If you or your loved ones has a gambling problem, help can be found at the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Three and a half years ago, Erickson accrued $400,000 in gambling debts. “But I thought this must be what I have to do. The sharing of experiences with friends, family, like I’ve never seen before. People love to bet on their football games.”

The situation became so dire, that Erickson contemplated killing himself. He considered going to Mexico and if he couldn’t kill himself there, he’d pay someone else to do it, he said.

But soon, it spiraled out of control.

“Life is great,” Erickson said. These are things that I avoided my whole life, not choosing to be a part of, but today I cherish them.”

‘A Devastating Illness’

Erickson is a compulsive gambler, a condition just as dangerous and debilitating as drug or alcohol addiction. “The miracles I’ve experienced. “It’s American, like apple pie. The college bowl games this weekend lead to the NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl. By some estimates, $7 billion is wagered on the Super Bowl alone in casinos, online and with bookies.

“I became this person I didn’t know,” he said. And when they caught on, he left his family and fled.

“Sports betting is the rock of Gibraltar,” Looney said. Then, it’s March Madness, where many participate in an office betting pool.

After 23 days on the run, Erickson turned himself in. There are an estimated 6 million people who deal with the problem in the United States. I got myself into this. Desperate, he began stealing from his clients. He credits a 12-step program to helping him overcome his problem, and he has not gambled in almost four years.

Nevertheless, the industry rakes in mind-boggling amounts of cash

Predict Football Score Predictions – How to Correctly Predict Outcome of Football Matches and Win Your Football Bet

Predict Football Score Predictions

Prediction football is more of a science than an art. These experts realize something that most people do not, and that is, prediction football do not need to be accurate to the extremes with match results, but all they need is a prediction football system to tell them whether their bets have a good enough opportunity to m888 beat the sports books’ handicap.. While a lot of people out there argue that football betting is won on factors like “gut feel”, “luck” and “experience”, the biggest winners that consistently make tons of money betting on football are still the ones who go about their “investments” in a scientific and systematic manner.

Sports books determine football handicaps and odds based on a number of data which they have collected over the years, therefore, while most people think that they can perfectly master the skill of prediction football just by understanding the sport itself, only a very small number of people who bet on football manage to win money consistently. As the saying goes, the ball is round, and there are factors in every game that can tilt the balance and the score line in an instant, so to regularly hit results perfectly in prediction football is certainly not possible. Betting on baseball cards – Jul. 28, 2006

“There’s always buyers and sellers for that material.”

Even in good times, collecting is a tough hobby. “This market has incredible potential,” he says. (See the most valuable cards.)

Most valuable cards

Andy Madec, a dealer based in Camarillo, Calif., remembers that time vividly.

______________

Up until the late 1980s and early 1990s, collectors were living in a golden age, says Madec – returns of 20 percent in just six months were not unheard of. It boils down to a couple of simple principles — how many there are and what kind of condition the card is in.

Dealers like Stephen Dickler, who runs SD Trading, located just outside of Philadelphia, says moves such as this could work, but it’s too early to tell. “The vintage market is still the place for people to get involved purely from an investment standpoint,” says Kelnhofer. “It turned people off.”

Then there are the cards from the 1970s and 1980s, which predate the card explosion, that some experts like Kelnhofer say could experience the next wave of popularity.

Cards dating back to the turn of the 20th century that were produced as promotional items for ice cream, candy and tobacco companies are some of the hottest cards on the market right now, according to collectors.

Steroids’ next victim: Baseball labor peace Top of page

What’s hot now

The hobby looks like it has rebounded from the doldrums of the 90s, but is there money to be made in collecting Aarons and Ruths?

Rookie cards of players like Mickey Mantle, who typified the golden era of baseball, are always in high demand among older collectors.

And in June, Major League Baseball and the players’ association teamed up with card manufacturers Topps and Upper Deck to launch the first ever National Baseball Card Day, giving out 500,000 card packs at hobby shops and retailers nationwide in an effort to promote the hobby.

Best baseball books

The market has been bouncing back, particularly vintage cards, those that date backs 25 years or more. Flooding the market with multiple versions of new cards, the manufacturers drove down card values.

Hope for future?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Once a year, baseball-card collectors gather for the granddaddy of all sports collectible conventions – the National Sports Collectors Convention.

Currently underway in Anaheim, Calif., the four-day event will not only be a place for collectors to haggle over the value of their Lou Gehrigs and Jackie Robinsons, there’s bound to be a few collectors who reflect on how the hobby took a nosedive during the 1990s.

Even though the hobby struggles to bring young collectors into the fold, there have been some promising signs for baseball card collecting as of late.

“It’s a tricky thing,” Kelnhofer says. “There’s no guarantee it will happen,” says Dickler. “Investors just need to hear it’s safe to go back in.”. In 1996, the year after Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record for number of most consecutive games played, a card in mint condition that had not been professionally appraised would have sold for $90. Earlier this year, the Major League Baseball Players Association lent their assistance, cutting in half the number of licenses it offers to card manufacturers in an effort to rid the glut of new cards on the market.

In fact, the fabled Honus Wagner card, which was produced by the Sweet Caporal Cigarette Company in 1909, is currently the most expensive card in existence, worth a cool $1.265 million. But that was until the card companies tried to get in on the fun. But with Ripken’s achievement faded from the minds of collectors, that same ungraded card would only fetch $40 today.

But many in the industry, like Madec, who is currently attending the National Sports Collectors Convention, is certain that is there is a future for this enduring hobby, despite its setbacks in recent years.

“It just got too out of hand,” says Madec, who runs his own firm, Andy Madec Sports Cards Inc. “The questions are still out there as to whether it will have an impact or not.”

But there is a lot of fickleness too, says Scott Kelnhofer, editor of Card Trade, the monthly trade journal for the sports collection industry

‘Concussion’ Doctor: ‘I Would Bet My Medical License’ O.J. Simpson Has Degenerative Brain Disease CTE

Simpson may be suffering from the disease — known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

Though he was found not guilty in the much-disputed 1995 criminal case, Simpson lost a wrongful death civil suit brought against him by the families of Goldman and his ex-wife. But that is how serious this is,” he said.

Omalu has not examined Simpson personally and CTE can only be diagnosed after death via an examination of brain tissue, but the doctor says he can identify the tell-tale signs of CTE’s behavioral symptoms, which he said include explosive, impulsive behavior, impaired judgment, criminality and even mood disorders.

Although Simpson never relied on that defense for his appeal, he was denied a new trial.

According to ESPN, during an appeal of his 33-year maximum sentence, Simpson’s attorney reportedly filed a sworn statement that his client had suffered “numerous blows to my head and/or landed on my head violently” while playing football.

“I would bet my medical license on it,” said Omalu.

Multiple NFL players — including Frank Gifford and Junior Seau — have been diagnosed with CTE after their deaths.

The strongest evidence that Simpson may have CTE, Omalu said, is his college and pro-playing years.

CTE is believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head.

Simpson himself once used concussions as part of a legal strategy after his conviction in the armed robbery case.

Speaking yesterday in an interview with ABC News, Dr. Bennet Omalu — the neuropathologist whose identification of CTE is depicted in “Concussion” starring Will Smith — said Simpson was “more likely than not” suffering from CTE.

Simpson, one of the most famous running backs in football history, became infamous after he was charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.

“I think because of our intoxication with football we are in some type of delusional denial. The following year — 13 years to the day after being acquitted in his criminal trial — he was found guilty of robbery and kidnapping and sentenced to up to 33 years in prison.

“He was exposed to thousands of blunt force trauma of his brain,” Omalu said.. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages.

While Omalu stressed that CTE does not cause the criminal behavior that led to Simpson’s incarceration, he wants the case to serve a reminder of the life-altering damage that can result from playing football.

In September 2007, Simpson was arrested in Las Vegas for armed robbery after attempting to steal sports memorabilia that he claimed belonged to him. It has been found mostly in athletes who play contact sports, such as football.

The renowned doctor whose discovery of a degenerative brain disease in football players inspired a hit movie says he believes O.J

NFL Teams in Alphabetical Order

Every year, the Super Bowl (the NFL championship game) is what excites football fans the most, with everyone looking forward to spending time together and watching the big game over some delicious food. As the biggest sports league that American football has ever seen, the craze about the NFL, its players, and the yearly Super Bowl only gets greater and wider. A very interesting fact is that, over 8 million pounds of guacamole is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday, and the sales of antacids increase drastically the next day! Such is the impact of the NFL, which seems to be only getting bigger with every passing year.

Formerly known as the American Professional Football Association, and started in the year 1920, the group soon adapted itself to the National Football League in the year 1922. Each zone has four teams, resulting in 16 teams under the AFC, and 16 under the NFC. The AFC and NFC have four zones each-North, South, East, and West. Usually, you will always find a zone-wise distribution of these teams. Also known as Super Bowl Sunday, it is a day on which maximum food is consumed, after Thanksgiving!

There are a total of 32 NFL teams, which have been divided into various zones of the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). A lot of people plan Super Bowl Sunday way in advance, and ensure that they have no engagements or commitments that day. As such, the total number of NFL teams is 32. Louis Rams

College football players have visible brain changes | Reuters

“Maybe this is just the precursor of it.”

Both Bellgowan and Bazarian said it will take longer studies to find out whether a smaller hippocampus may cause problems for these athletes in the future.

“Boys hear about the long-term effect on guys when they’re retired from football, but this shows that 20-year-olds might be having some kind of effect,” said Patrick Bellgowan, the study’s senior author from the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Players who had been diagnosed with concussions and those who had been playing for years had smaller hippocampuses – a brain structure critical to memory – compared to those who never played football or played for fewer years, researchers found.

The participants had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of their brains and researchers used the images to measure the volume of certain brain regions. “None of these players were feeling bad but their brain structure isn’t normal.”

The longer the young men had played football, the smaller their hippocampuses were and the slower their reaction time on one of the tests.

“People try to understand why some NFL players have what looks like Alzheimer’s in their forties,” Dr. “How did they get there? I think this study points out the early stages of that.”

There has been growing concern over whether the connection between contact sports – like football – and CTE, which is a brain disease known to affect some athletes who experience repeated hits to the head, may extend to younger players.. The athletes also took a computerized test to assess their cognitive abilities.

“Maybe there is something going on early on,” he said. “The conservative approach is what I’m hoping to get out there,” he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The brains of college football players may already display the effects of years of taking hits, according to a new brain imaging study.

The researchers found that college athletes had hippocampuses between 17 percent and 26 percent smaller than non-athletes. Those who had been diagnosed with concussions also had smaller hippocampuses than the players without past concussions.

Bellgowan is also on the faculty at the University of Tulsa, where, he said, “Participation of the athletic department was essential to this work.”

For now, Bellgowan suggested that parents and coaches take a conservative approach when dealing with student athletes by taking them to specialists when they walk off the field with a headache.

Between June 2011 and August 2013 the researchers recruited 25 college football players who had been diagnosed with a concussion, 25 players without a history of diagnosed concussion and 25 similar young men who had never played.

The symptoms of CTE, which tend to set in years after the last traumas, often include memory loss, aggression and dementia.

Bazarian was not involved with the new research, but has studied the brains of young athletes at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York.

The researchers write in JAMA that they didn’t find any differences in behavior between players and non-players, but Bellgowan told Reuters Health that a smaller hippocampus is linked to depression, schizophrenia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

“We keep hearing about retired football players having diseases that relate back to smaller hippocampuses,” Bellgowan said. Jeffrey Bazarian said
